Tori Wrånes b. 1978
First premiered in 2018 for the exhibition Handmade Acoustics at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland, this sculptural painting is an example of Tori Wrånes’ interest in engaging many senses at once.
Tori Wrånes shares, “When I sing in a non-verbal language, it’s like sculpting. Both the voice and paintings contain emotion because it is an action that comes out of the body.”
Voice, for Wrånes, is a material matter that can be shaped and can shape others. These “Handmade Acoustics” made of silicone and epoxy are a set of action-based abstract paintings composed of the same silicone and pigment that form the prosthetics of her costumes and sculptures. Curator of Handmade Acoustics Joanna Zielinska shares, “Here, it is the sounds that choreograph the space and objects, while paintings act as musical scores and human voice takes on shape as if it were a sculpture.”
