This is the first publication devoted to the work of Brooklyn-based painter JJ Manford (born 1983), known for his vibrant interiors that bring together imagined domestic spaces with historical artworks, textiles, furniture, and animals. Simultaneously painterly and cinematic, Manford’s recent paintings explore the layered coexistence of the natural and built environments. In an interview with Maake magazine, he describes his approach to color as an “optical mixture,” drawing from Impressionist and Pointillist techniques to capture the shifting quality of light. Working primarily on burlap—a nod to Seurat’s use of textured linen—he embraces the material’s irregular surface, allowing paint to settle into its peaks and valleys and creating a rich sense of depth. Combining Seurat’s vibrant palette, Cézanne’s structural clarity, and his own imaginative sensibility, Manford constructs interiors that feel both dreamlike and grounded in visual history.
