Surface Mag: Designer of the Day - Vincent Pocsik

Ryan Waddoups, Surface Mag, October 19, 2022

Vincent Pocsik’s meticulously crafted anatomical sculptures wield a certain power: they give pause and excite new perspectives of the human condition at every encounter. From his studio in Los Angeles, the SCI-Arc–trained artist restlessly experiments with wood, glass, and metal to transform his favored materials into provocative, grotesque creations that take on a life of their own.

Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio.

Studio location: Los Angeles.

Describe what you make: I make abstract anatomical wooden (mostly) sculptures that have an aspect or suggestion of functionality.

“Cabinet Is Me” (2022) at Objective Gallery

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: My latest piece, Cabinet Is Me

Describe the problem your work solves: I like to think my work creates more problems then they solve. My hope is that the work creates a tension in people, which makes them look at the human condition in a new way.

Describe the project you are working on now: Currently putting the finishing touches on pieces for my show, “Cabinet is Me” at Objective Gallery in New York, which has 14 unique pieces. The exhibition is a meditation of the everyday existence of domestic life and what it is to be a human body in a home. Meanwhile, it’s also a continuation of my exploration of wood as a medium, using a mix of digital and traditional techniques to find new forms and feeling from the material itself.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Creating new works for Design Miami/ this year that also explore the same intentions as “Cabinet is Me,” and works to show at Nada.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Music, Bluetooth ear protection, books on tape, and water.

What you do when you’re not working: I love to surf, walk in the woods, and have a few drinks with friends.

Sources of creative envy: Envy is an emotion I work on not having.  But I have the greatest respect for any artist that’s able to stay true to their craft for a lifetime.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Doubt and social media.
