STEP AND SCREW: STOCK PHOTO EXCHANGE is a drawing/collage project that springs from my reimagining of Philip Guston’s klansmen. Recently, in my comics and paintings, I’ve used the klansman to represent America’s contract with White Supremacy, especially how that contract is negotiated with Black Americans. I’ve paired the volatile klansman symbol with my own Black superhero, Torpedoboy, in order to highlight the “exchange” or dialogue that Black Americans are forced into daily. For this project, I decided to bring in new characters, shifting the variables around to see how this contract could be redrawn. I’ve paired the drawings with photos that I’ve scavenged from eBay to extend the cultural memory of the project, effectively broadening its associative field.
