We are pleased to announce that Summer Wheat is a 2019 recipient of the Northern Trust Purchase Prize and her painting, Extinguishers, 2019 has been acquired for the permanent collection of The Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Northern Trust Purchase Prize is an annual gift of an artwork selected from EXPO CHICAGO, and donated to the collection of a Greater Midwest Region cultural institution. Stephen Reily, the Director of the Speed Art Museum, joined by the museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art Miranda Lash, selected artworks from two of the exhibiting EXPOSURE galleries-- Summer Wheat with Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles and Kameelah Janan Rasheed with Nome Gallery, Berlin. The EXPOSURE section, curated by Naima Keith, Vice President of Education and Public Programs at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), elevates the profile of international galleries and supports the careers of emerging artists.
Summer Wheat is also one of fifteen artists to participate in EXPO Chicago’s OVERRIDE billboard project. As a special feature of OVERRIDE, a single screen at 515 W Congress Parkway will present a self-contained exhibition including three works by Summer Wheat. The exhibition will run through September 29th. Wheat's paintings will also be projected on Art on the MART's 2.5 acre façade the evening of Saturday, September 21st.
