In Holes Wheat combines her reflecting puddles motif with reclining female figures suggestively inserting or removing produce from these cosmic openings. The women are digging for sustenance in these spaces and exploring the black shadow beneath the watermelons. Despite the deep black behind the color of Summer’s pushed line work, there is a suggested light source in the shifting color of the flowers and the women’s faces. A moon might be casting light on this scene.
