This newest series of paintings depict women nourishing themselves against a backdrop of black night. The aluminum mesh works illustrate women enjoying the consumption of food with a wink of suggestive humor as ripe fruits and vegetables are pulled from the ground and inserted into mouths. Carrots and cucumbers sliced on plates depict the act of eating as a transfer of energy from one living thing to another. This transformation from ripened produce to calories is clear in Carrot Dipping, where a carrot dangles over an open mouth after being harvested [ . . . ] Figures are surrounded by leaves and stems as they bask in the bounty of summer gardens and enjoy earth’s fertility. The scenes show women as capable of nurturing themselves and living in harmony with their environment in a fair exchange. The production of ripe fruit and lush grass is proof of a healthy garden, and a delicious whiff of sensuality.
