This silicone-based sculpture, Hoolahoop for Velvet Hips, 2017, continues Tori Wrånes’ desire to question and contrast our perception of objects and how they should perform. A typical hula hoop–a solid, plastic circular toy hoop that is twirled around the waist, limbs, or neck–is now altered in a way that is now soft and flexible. This contrast of hard and soft, flexible and tension are themes that permeate in Wrånes’ practice. The work was first shown in her 2017 solo exhibitions Hot Pocket at the Museum of Contemporary Art, National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design in Oslo, Norway, and in 2018 for Handmade Acoustics at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland.
