Shulamit Nazarian is pleased to debut a solo presentation of new paintings on linen and framed paintings on Yupo paper by Los Angeles-based Annie Lapin. These works will be on view at The Armory Show in New York City from September 9th – 12th, 2021.

Continuing her interest in merging the genres of abstraction, figuration, and landscape, these new works draw from various art historical references. Figures become consumed into epic environments that emerge from large swaths of gestural abstraction. Polychromatic cloudy skyscapes are rendered with photorealistic detail, as textural treelines signal the sublime imagery of romantic landscape painting, conjuring a sense of mystery, spirituality, and fervor.

While referencing numerous moments of art history, the vivid color and radical collapsing of foreground and background within Lapin’s newest paintings situates her pictorial space as strikingly contemporary. In Various Light Cones, a diminutive equestrian figure is not so much overshadowed by sweeping vistas as it is by heaps of poured paint, with the pigment in turn taking on a monolithic terrestrial quality.

Debuting at The Armory Show is a series of framed paintings on Yupo paper. These expressive works provide the artist a more gestural process of paint application, as swirls of color intermingle and shift the painting from abstraction to representation, and back again. Misty atmospheric spaces become punctuated with figures, vegetation, and deep space, providing the viewer with a window into a dynamic and ever evolving terrain.
